Plugging a portable generator directly into your home's outlets using an extension cord is unsafe and illegal. The correct way to connect a generator to your home is through a transfer switch — a device that safely disconnects your home from the utility grid before connecting generator power. Without one, you risk back-feeding electricity onto utility lines, endangering lineworkers and potentially damaging your generator when utility power returns.
A manual transfer switch (MTS) requires you to physically flip a switch when you start your generator. They are simpler, less expensive, and work well for portable generators. A manual transfer switch typically covers a selection of critical circuits — furnace, refrigerator, sump pump, lights — rather than the whole house.
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) detects when utility power is lost and automatically starts a standby generator and transfers the load, then transfers back when utility power returns. ATS systems are used with whole-house standby generators and require no action from the homeowner. They are more expensive but offer complete hands-off backup power.
A standard 6-10 circuit manual transfer switch panel covers your most critical loads. Common selections for Newcastle and Seattle-area homes include the furnace or heat pump air handler, refrigerator, a few lighting circuits, the sump pump, and the well pump if applicable. Your electrician will work with you to prioritize which circuits matter most for your household.

We had a manual transfer switch installed ahead of last winter's ice storm season. When the power went out for two days in February, we had heat, lights, and the fridge running the whole time. Best electrical investment we have made.
