Where they are required, what they cost, and when a tripping GFCI means it is time to call an electrician.
A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet monitors the current flowing through a circuit and shuts off power within milliseconds if it detects a ground fault — a situation where electricity is taking an unintended path, such as through water or a person. They are the outlets with the TEST and RESET buttons you see in bathrooms and kitchens.
Under the current NEC as adopted in Washington, GFCI protection is required in:
Many older homes in Newcastle, Renton, and Bellevue are missing GFCI protection in some of these locations. This is a code violation and a genuine safety issue. A licensed electrician can assess and bring your home up to current standards.
One GFCI outlet can protect downstream outlets on the same circuit when wired correctly — your electrician will assess whether this is possible in your home to reduce the total number of GFCI devices needed.
A GFCI that trips repeatedly is detecting a ground fault somewhere on the circuit. Common causes: a faulty appliance plugged into the circuit, moisture in an outdoor outlet box, a wiring problem, or a deteriorated GFCI device that needs replacement. Try unplugging everything from the circuit and resetting. If it stays reset, plug appliances back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it trips immediately with nothing plugged in, call an electrician — there is likely a wiring issue.
Our garage outlets never had GFCI protection. Clarity Electric came out and upgraded all four outlets plus the outdoor outlet on the same trip. Quick job and now we are up to code.
