How Much Does Hot Tub Wiring Cost?

Most full-size hot tubs and spas require a dedicated 240-volt, 50-amp circuit with a GFCI disconnect. This is not a DIY project. Washington State requires a licensed electrician and a permit for all 240V installations. Here is what homeowners in Seattle, Renton, Newcastle, and Bellevue can expect to pay.

Hot Tub Wiring Cost Breakdown

  • Standard 240V/50A hot tub hookup: $500 to $1,200. Includes dedicated circuit, GFCI disconnect, conduit run to the tub location, and connections.
  • Short run (panel near tub, under 25 feet): $500 to $800.
  • Long run (50+ feet or through walls/crawlspace): $800 to $1,500.
  • Panel upgrade needed: Add $2,500 to $4,500 if your panel cannot support the additional 50-amp load.

GFCI Disconnect Requirement

NEC code requires a GFCI-protected disconnect switch within line of sight of the hot tub, at least 5 feet from the water. This is a safety device that cuts power to the tub and protects against electrical shock. The disconnect is included in our installation pricing.

Do I Need a Permit?

Yes. King County and all cities within it (Renton, Bellevue, Newcastle, Kirkland) require an electrical permit for hot tub wiring. We handle the permit application and schedule the inspection as part of our service.

120V vs 240V Hot Tubs

Some smaller "plug and play" hot tubs run on a standard 120V/15A outlet. These do not require an electrician. However, they heat slowly and cannot run the jets and heater at the same time. Most full-size spas (5+ person) require 240V service for proper performance.

Had Clarity Electric wire our new hot tub on the back patio. They ran the 240V line from the garage panel, installed the disconnect box, and had everything inspected within a week. Professional and clean work.
