Most homeowners do not think about their electrical panel until something goes wrong. But an aging or undersized panel is one of the most common problems we find in Newcastle and King County homes built before the 1990s. If your panel is original to your home, running a busy modern household through it is a real risk. A 200 amp service upgrade is one of the smartest investments you can make in your home.
The warning signs are usually there before a panel fails completely. Breakers that trip when you run multiple appliances at once, lights that dim when the dryer or AC kicks on, a panel that feels warm to the touch, a fuse box instead of a breaker box, or burn marks around the panel door — any of these mean it is time to call an electrician. If you are planning to add an EV charger, heat pump, or additional living space, your existing panel likely will not have the capacity to support it without an upgrade first.
We had a 100 amp panel from the 1970s and were tripping breakers constantly. Clarity Electric upgraded us to 200 amps and coordinated everything with PSE. The whole job was done in one day and the difference was immediate.

Really helpful post. Our home was built in 1987 and we have been having the exact issue with the microwave tripping the breaker. Going to get it looked at.
Thanks Mark. That is a classic sign of an overloaded circuit. Happy to take a look — give us a call at 425-210-4791 and we can usually get out within a day or two.
We just had our panel upgraded by Clarity Electric last month. Whole process was smooth and they handled the PSE coordination. Highly recommend.
