AFCI Breaker Requirements in Washington State

What arc fault circuit interrupters are, where they're required, and what Newcastle homeowners need to know.
An Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) is a type of circuit breaker designed to detect the electrical arcing that causes most home fires. Unlike a standard breaker that only trips on overloads or short circuits, an AFCI monitors the circuit for the specific signature of an arc fault — a dangerous condition that can occur inside walls, in outlet boxes, or along damaged wiring — and cuts power before a fire can start.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, arc faults are responsible for roughly 30,000 home fires per year in the U.S. AFCI breakers were introduced to address exactly this risk.
Washington State adopts the National Electrical Code (NEC), and as of the 2020 NEC — which Washington has adopted — AFCI protection is required in virtually all living spaces. Specifically, AFCI breakers are required for circuits serving:
In short, for new construction and most renovation work in Washington State, AFCI protection is required throughout the home. If you are doing permitted electrical work, your inspector will check for compliance.
Existing homes are not required to retrofit AFCI protection unless they are doing a panel upgrade, adding new circuits, or undergoing a renovation that triggers a permit. However, many homeowners in Newcastle, Renton, and Bellevue choose to add AFCI breakers proactively — especially in older homes with aluminum wiring or knob-and-tube circuits where arc fault risk is higher.
If you are having a panel upgrade done, it is an ideal time to add AFCI protection to your bedroom and living room circuits. The incremental cost is modest compared to the fire risk reduction.
GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects against shock — it detects current leaking to ground and shuts off the circuit. GFCI is required in bathrooms, kitchens near water, garages, and outdoor outlets. AFCI protects against fire from arcing. In some locations, a combination AFCI/GFCI breaker is required. Your electrician will know the right protection type for each circuit based on current code.
We were getting a panel upgrade done and Clarity Electric recommended adding AFCI breakers to our bedrooms while they were at it. Very reasonable cost to add. We feel a lot better about our older home wiring now.

AFCI breakers typically cost $35–$60 per breaker for parts, plus installation labor. If they are added during a panel upgrade, the labor is minimal. If you are retrofitting them after the fact, expect to pay for the electrician's time to open the panel, swap breakers, and test each circuit. For most homes, adding AFCI to all bedrooms runs $300–$700 depending on the number of circuits.
