How Long Does a Panel Upgrade Take in Seattle?

The electrician finishes in a day. Here is why the full project takes 2 to 4 weeks, and how to prepare.

The Short Answer: One Day of Work, 2 to 4 Weeks Total

When homeowners in Newcastle, Renton, or Bellevue ask how long a panel upgrade takes, they are usually expecting the answer to be a few hours. The physical installation typically takes a licensed electrician one full day, including shutting down power, removing the old panel, installing the new panel, reconnecting all circuits, and restoring power.

But the overall project from contract signing to completed inspection runs closer to 2 to 4 weeks in the King County area. Here is why.

Step 1: Electrical Permit (1 to 2 Weeks)

Washington State requires an electrical permit for any panel replacement. In most King County jurisdictions, including unincorporated King County, the City of Renton, Bellevue, Issaquah, and Newcastle, permits are processed through the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) electrical program. Online permit applications typically take 3 to 7 business days to be issued. Your electrician handles this entirely, but it must happen before work begins.

Step 2: PSE Coordination (1 to 3 Weeks)

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is the utility serving most of the Newcastle and King County area. PSE must disconnect power at the meter before the electrician can replace the panel, and PSE must reconnect after the work is complete and the permit inspection has passed.

PSE scheduling for meter pulls and reconnects typically takes 1 to 3 weeks depending on crew availability and season. Summer and storm season backlogs can stretch this further. In some cases, PSE can offer a same-day reconnect if the disconnect and reconnect are on the same day, which your electrician can coordinate. This keeps your power outage to a single day rather than multiple days.

Step 3: The Installation Day

On installation day, your power will be off for approximately 6 to 10 hours. Here is what happens:

  • PSE arrives to pull the meter and disconnect service (or the utility locks out the service)
  • The electrician removes the old panel and installs the new panel enclosure and bus work
  • All existing branch circuits are reconnected and labeled
  • New circuits added as part of the scope (EV charger, heat pump, etc.) are rough-wired
  • The electrician calls for inspection
  • PSE reinstalls the meter and restores power (same day if scheduled)

Step 4: Final Inspection (1 to 5 Days After Installation)

The L&I electrical inspector schedules a final inspection of the completed panel. In King County, inspection appointments are typically available within 2 to 5 business days. The inspection takes 20 to 30 minutes. Once it passes, the permit is closed and you are done.

What Can Delay the Project?

  • Meter base replacement: If PSE requires the meter base to be replaced as part of the upgrade (common on older services), this adds coordination time and materials cost.
  • Service entrance work: If the overhead service entrance cable or weatherhead is in poor condition, it must be repaired or replaced before PSE will reconnect.
  • Unexpected wiring issues: Double-tapped circuits, aluminum branch wiring, or unlabeled circuits discovered during the panel swap can add time to the installation day.
  • PSE backlog: During summer heat or storm season, PSE scheduling can run 3 weeks or more.

How to Prepare for Your Panel Upgrade

  • Plan for a full day without power. Arrange to work remotely elsewhere or use a generator for critical devices if needed.
  • Make sure your electrician has confirmed the PSE disconnect and reconnect schedule before the installation day is booked.
  • Clear access to the panel area and the path to the meter base.
  • Have any add-on work (EV charger circuit, heat pump circuit, etc.) scoped into the same job to avoid a return visit.

Clarity Electric managed the whole process, from pulling the permit to coordinating with PSE. We were without power for about 7 hours on installation day, and they had everything back on and labeled perfectly. From signing the contract to final inspection took about 3 weeks, which they told us upfront.
